I’ve been talking about starting a bookish website for months now, but I’ve dithered because I’m a hopeless and professional procrastinator with lots of anxiety. Seriously, I’m one of the best.
However, now that I’m quite literally stuck at home instead of just staying in because I’m a hermit by nature, I’m going to go live with this thing without really having any plan or content yet.
So, let’s talk books.
Specifically, let’s talk about the books that give you comfort during difficult times because these times are pretty damn difficult. What do you read when you need something to wrap you up in a blanket and hand you a hot drink? Which genres, authors, or specific titles do you turn to when everything stops making sense?
I’ll go first. Obviously.
To be honest, reading books has been a struggle lately. What I have been reading is a lot of fan fiction because I find reading new stories about familiar characters is easier than getting to know new characters. I just don’t seem to have the energy to make the acquaintance of anyone new either in real life or in my fiction. And honestly, there are some really fantastic fan fiction authors out there, so don’t let anyone shame you for spending your reading time on Wattpad or AO3. Additionally, if you are fanfic writer, I tip my hat and thank you.
Last night though, on the eve of what is going to be a pretty difficult day for my family made exponentially more difficult due to the pandemic, I reread a perpetual favorite: The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery.
But what reading material do you pick up when everything is awful and nothing makes sense? Let’s make a list together.
